Capstone Cool Time has been a very successful feed since it was released in South Africa in 2005. Cool Time is a high-energy, micronized, oats free feed, which has a wide range of applications for horses. It has been fed with great success to performance horses, racehorses, breeding horses and hacks.
Cool Time has been further enhanced by the addition of “beet pulp shreds” to the feed. Beet pulp is a popular feed ingredient in Europe and North America. It supplies energy principally from digestible fibre, rather than starch and is a source of cool energy. The fibre in most forages (grasses and hays) is only partially fermented by the bacteria in the large intestine so the total amount of energy that the horse can derive from forage fermentation is limited.
Beet pulp, on the other hand, contains a large amount of fibre that is extremely fermentable. Beet pulp consists of around 67% total fibre. About one-third of this fibre is in a soluble form called pectin. Pectin is extremely fermentable and is completely utilized by the microbes in the horse’s large intestine.
Research at Kentucky Equine has shown that 75% of the fibre in beet pulp is utilized by the horse, compared to about 40% of the fibre in typical hay. Consequently, the energy content of beet pulp is about 50% higher than teff hay and nearly the energy density of oats.
Another characteristic that makes beet pulp an attractive feed for horses is its water holding capacity. Beet pulp holds 3 times its weight in water, so feeding soaked beet pulp is a practical way to encourage greater water consumption, or to hold water in the horse’s gut.
Beet pulp supplies energy without the fizz or fuss of grains, and complements the highly digestible energy coming from micronized barley, maize and lupins. It is very palatable and helps your horse maintain a happy and healthy gut.
Capstone Cool Time is the 2nd South African made feed to contain beet pulp after the release of the internationally renowned racing feed Capstone Race 13, recently. Research separates the innovator from the imitator and once again, Capstone feeds are at the forefront of innovation in supplying great feeds to South African horse owners.
